Why are the Minnesota Vikings named with the state of Minnesota? Not a city?

What about the New England Patriots? They're not named for a city or state but a region. You also have the Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans, and Arizona Cardinals. It's a matter of naming the team when they come into the league, or changing in some cases (Boston to NE, Phoenix to AZ). Hope this helps.
