If an asteroid was coming to hit earth what would we do to prevent it from hitting earth?

The things in movies like Armageddon, or Deep Impact are not feasible with our current level of technology, and also not likely to succeed. If it was a small enough asteroid, the best solution would be to evacuate the area projected to be hit.
